During Africa Policy Week 2023, delegates from government, civil society, academia and the affected communities shared and heard how policies impact people and what is being done to ensure that future policies put people first. Policies should support, not frustrate, evidence-informed services and interventions that improve health and well-being and not further marginalise and oppress people already stigmatised, marginalised and at increased risk.

May I express our sincere gratitude for inviting us to such a successful, empowering, informative and educational Africa Policy Week. |

The SA Drug Policy Week is the premier drug policy event in Africa. There were three previous Policy Weeks, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The fourth Policy Week was planned for 2020, but due to COVID-19, the 2020 and 2021 Policy Weeks did not happen. As an interim measure and to keep the debate alive, SA Drug Policy at TB HIV Care and SANPUD, with financial support from UNODC, OSF and the Love Alliance, held the African Policy Day in February 2022.
While previous events have focused on drug policy in South Africa, the 2023 event broadened the discussion to cover issues impacting other key populations and marginalised communities in other parts of Africa. The aim is to learn from other African countries and share our unique experiences in the African context.
