The voice of people who rely on rural cannabis cultivation as their only viable source of income is seldom heard in any drug policy debate. Their livelihood that has a history of sometimes centuries is threatened both by prohibition and by legal regulation. The spraying of Glyphosate on not only their "illicit" crops, but over all crops, livestock and children has plagued these communities for years. We hear from some of the communities that have been most impacted by the war on drugs, and how they will be economically deprived by thoughtless regulation. Local rural community leaders share their experiences. South Africa can learn from the experiences gained by growers in the Moroccan RIF region, and we can learn from the way Columbia has tried to assist coca growers develop a legal economy.
